MARK ROTHKO

Our emotions are an artist's movement. The body is meant to exemplify. Our eyes interpret without the consent of our mind. As a transcriber, our bodies can only feel what is thought to be contemplated. We believe in the power to transcend reality. We have served the purpose of documentation but for no longer will it state. Our reality is not entirely direct. We are slaves to how we feel. We define these terms of art asking the question, what do we recognize as art?

With such intent behind the creation, how can we define the emotional value in a piece in which we do not conceive within ourselves? Must we betray our inner realities deviating from the condescending representation of art? It is difficult to explain a Rothko without looking at it, it is possible to have a written description in the form of context. However, can we truly understand the manipulation of concepts through printed words on a paper? What consequences do words have on paper? If we base the judgement off none, then the contemplation we pursue leaves dissonance.

The artist statement is the vital piece of evidence from the artist that determines the necessary thought to provoke your emotions. It is possible to leave a lasting impression on one if done so precariously that volleys ambiguity. To our ignorance of what we need to understand any piece, the process is fruitless. If art represents life, why are we told the definition? Ignorance is bliss, we naturally have a deep instinct to explore the unknown world, reaching further into our curiosity. To peak that curiosity ambiguity is essential to intrigue others. To renegade mental processes, the temporary unknown truth ladders to “fill in the blank”. Kandinsky for example, fills in what we think are the blanks but explores how we might interpret to what is unknown to ourselves.

The art we make to evoke deep ridden curiosity without enforcing what we may already know. Art should inspire. The provocation of thought and emotion are seen within works that do not project the life of the artist. The artist is the author and the designer is the audience. What we shall perceive is not to be undermined, we determine our own perception. I shall not exclaim what art is to humanity but invoke the opportunity to seek beauty through expression. It is also not necessarily the rejection of realism but the fantasy we seek beyond reality.
